And the reason I haven't posted for more than a month... my job's kicking my ass. I can honestly say that I haven't worked so hard for a long time. But it's fun despite that, doing something that you can sink your mind (teeth?) into. Perhaps it says a lot about my capabilities that I feel good about doing a job where I'm pretending to be a machine.

Well, at least the honeymoon period hasn't died off yet.

Anyway, visits to more knitting-related sites like Yarn Review and yarn sites such as Land o Lace (lace yarns) and Yubina yarn (how cool does yarn from Inner Mongolia sound?), there's also:

Person Paper on Purity in Languge by Douglas Hofstadter. I think picking out all the arguments about gendered language counts as a drinking game.

Ban Comic Sans. There's a hategroup against Comic Sans font... what's next? Tho' the logo looks a bit like "Comic Sars" to me.

Live in a spaceship. The kind on bricks, that is. From Lovely Listing

The community for women who blog. Self-explanatory.

Debrett's. Ditto.

Stephen Hawking Defends Care in Britain, and a discussion of an editorial in Investor’s Business Daily which said Mr Hawking “wouldn’t have a chance in the UK,” where the health service would have deemed his life “essentially worthless.” Hawking is, of course, British. Hah.

Even if you love Hello Kitty and won't hear a word against the mouthless cat, Hello Kitty Hell is still thoroughly enjoyable.

Evil Shakespeare Overlord List, or, what you shouldn't do while putting on a Shakespeare play, part 1, part 2 and part 3.

92. I will not project a PowerPoint slideshow onto a large screen above and behind the actors, ever, for any reason, no matter what.
122. If Macbeth is dressed in 1930s-era fascist chic, Lady Macbeth will not be allowed to dress in a 1960s caftan, complete with beads.

Yah, this is exactly what certain stage productions at the annual arts festival need to learn.

Hm, have been too stressed to read lately (knitting instead), but finished a book over the weekend.

Title: Turn Coat (book 11 of Dresden Files)
Author: Jim Butcher

Spoilers within. Plus it's entirely reversed. )

Riffs on grammar from [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes.

Strange Maps, has morbidity in the form of a map of people who attempted/completed suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge

I had a moment of feeling about three inches tall while reading about how small my reference pool is. Yech. Maybe I can make use of the copious time in my non-employment to read more...

Though I'm glad I didn't find out about the Terry Prachett fansite, with all the book references you could want until I'd read most of the books. Because part of the fun was figuring out Prachett's digs. (And the references on that website? Totally a cheat sheet.)

Yesterday the imaginary paper had a bit on Japan lifting its ban on organ donation for children. Also reported here. Had a rant all about how some countries are so behind the times, but am reminded of backwardness in own backyard re: homosexuality (c'mon, India has taken a step ahead!) so have nothing to stand on.

And speaking of Japanese law, this is one cool website: Supreme Court of Japan (in English). Eh, your coolness evaluation might vary.

It's probably only my sense of humour that makes me want to watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie. (Well, other than the whap on the head Harry got for saying "But I'm the chosen one.") It's this:

"I saw the film again a couple of nights ago at the premiere and ... my God, my lips are like the lips of a horse, kind of distending independently away from my face and trying to encompass the lower half of hers," Radcliffe, 19, said.

"So I apologize for that," he said.

From here.

Also, the imaginary paper recently had this fun article about not drinking bottled water, here in pdf mode. Which reminds me of one of the earlier posts on Stuff White People Like, wherein the habits of bottled water-loving people are described
